A pelvic organ prolapse is a condition in which the pelvic organ of a woman likes bladder or uterus, drop down from their actual position into the vaginal area, due to the weakening of their supportive tissues. Childbirth, excess stretch, straining, weight lifting, aging, loss of estrogen, menopause, etc. Are some of the common reasons behind the weakening of such supportive tissues and muscles. There are a few kinds of pelvic organ prolapse and it is very important to have a proper knowledge about them to cure the condition in a far better way.
- Cystocele: It is basically the falling of the bladder, which changes the angle of the urethra (a tube that carries urine from the body) and the condition of falling both the organ is known as the cystourethrocele, which further leads to the condition of urinary stress incontinence.
- Rectocele: Rectocele is also known in the medical term as proctocele. The condition occurs when the rectum falls down against the wall of the vagina and in extreme cases out of the vagina. It creates bulges that one can easily notice during the bowel movement.
- Enterocele: Another kind of pelvic organ prolapse is Enterocele, in which the front and back walls of the vagina get separated. This condition majorly occurs when a woman undergoes a hysterectomy.
- Prolapsed Uterus: It involves the drop down of the uterus or womb of a woman into the vagina and outside the vagina in extreme cases. It further has four stages:
- First Degree: In this uterus only drop into the upper portion of the vagina.
- Second Degree: In this uterus descends a bit more into the lower portion of the vagina.
- Third Degree: In this, the uterus usually sags into the vaginal opening.
- Fourth Degree: In extreme cases, it finally falls out of the vagina.
- Vaginal Vault Prolapse: Last but not the least in the list is a vaginal vault prolapse, which occurs after the surgical removal of the uterus from the woman’s body. This is because the ligaments and tissues support the uterus gradually falls toward the vaginal opening.
These are some of the common types of Pelvic Organ Prolapse that a large number of women face in their lifetime. Their symptoms are quite embarrassing for a woman to share with anyone; therefore, they prefer to suffer in the silence.
